NAM Backs Palestinian Right to Self-Determination

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) reaffirmed support for the Palestinian people’s right to decide their own destiny and enjoy a sovereign state with al-Quds (Jerusalem) as its capital.

Speaking on behalf of the NAM, whose rotating presidency is held by Iran, Iranian Deputy UN Ambassador Gholam Hossein Dehqani criticized the United Nations for failure to achieve its decolonization objectives.

He made the comments in a meeting of the Special Political and Decolonization Committee (also known as the Fourth Committee), held at the UN on Thursday.

Dehqani also voiced NAM’s support for the rights of colonized people and deplored the fact that 17 territories are still on the UN list of Non-Self-Governing Territories.

He called on the UN to intensify efforts to fulfill its decolonization responsibilities.

The Iranian envoy further urged the powers that govern the colonized territories to make up for any economic, social and cultural damages caused by colonization.

The Fourth Committee is a committee of the UN General Assembly that deals with a variety of subjects which include those related to decolonization, Palestinian refugees and human rights, peacekeeping, mine action, outer space, public information, atomic radiation and University for Peace.
