Analyst Terms US Military Threat against Syria "Psychological War"

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A former Russian diplomat said Washington will not launch a military attack on Syria, and stated that the current US anti-Syrian war rhetoric serves merely psychological goals.

Washington will launch no military operation against Damascus and the US military threats against Syria are part of a psychological campaign against Damascus, Vislav Matozov told Tasnim.

“I do not think the United States will resort to a dangerous and adventurist military action against Syria without a resolution by the UN Security Council ,” he said.

Referring to the presence of four US warships near the Syria coastal waters, the Russian analyst said, “They cannot be there for launching a military attack against Syria, because they neither have sufficient facilities, nor enough power.”

His remarks came after the US President, Barack Obama, met Saturday with his national security team to discuss reports of a chemical weapons attack near Damascus on Wednesday.

"Once we ascertain the facts, the president will make an informed decision about how to respond,"  a White House official told AFP.

"We have a range of options available, and we are going to act very deliberately so that we're making decisions consistent with our national interest as well as our assessment of what can advance our objectives in Syria."

Saturday's meeting occurred as a top UN official arrived in Damascus to investigate alleged use of chemical weapons near Damascus.
