Leader Appoints Jalili as Expediency Council Member

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei appointed the former Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) secretary Saeed Jalili as a new member of the Expediency Council.

Jalili who was a legal member of the Expediency Council as SNSC secretary, a job he held for six years, has now become a real member of the council.

He was also Iran’s top negotiator in the country’s talks with the six major world powers (the US, Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China).

Saeed Jalili was meanwhile one of the eight candidates who ran for president in this year's election and came third with about 11% of the votes.

As SNSC secretary, Jalili was succeeded by Rear Admiral Ali Shamkhani,58, who used to take the post of defense minister from August 1997 until August 2005 under former Iranian President Mohammad Khatami.
