Portuguese FM Calls for Continued Consultation with Iran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Foreign ministers of Portugal and Iran met on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly to discuss bilateral ties as well as major international developments and emphasized the importance of further consultations between the two countries.

The Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said in his meeting with his Portuguese counterpart Paulo Portas that there was no hinderance to Tehran-Lisbon improved relations.

“When the proper ground is in place, our bilateral economic cooperation can expand more than before,” added Zarif.

Foreign Minister Portas, too, for his part expressed satisfaction over the good level of bilateral ties and asked for the continuation of the two countries’ diplomatic consultations over major world developments.

The two top diplomats also talked on Iran's peaceful nuclear program and major international developments, particulalry the Syrian crisis in their meeting.

To celebrate the 500th anniversary of relations between Portugal and Iran, the University of Lisbon organized a festival on Iranian art and culture earlier this month.

Co-sponsored by the University of Lisbon's division of cultural activities and the Iranian embassy, the exhibition gave residents of Lisbon a unique opportunity to learn about historic links between the two countries as well as Iran's cultural heritage.
