TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in a message to his Venezuelan counterpart Nicholas Maduro congratulated him on the victory of pro-Chavez ruling party in the country’s municipal elections.
Chavismo is the name given to the left-wing political ideology based on the ideas, programs and government style associated with the late president of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez.
“I wholeheartedly congratulate you and the Venezuelan government and nation on the municipal and city council elections in Venezuela that led to landslide victory of the United Socialist Party,” President Rouhani said in his message on Monday.
President Rouhani said the Venezuelan people once more confirmed their support for the continuation of "the process of political, social and economic development to build an independent and developed country based on national capacities."
He also voiced Tehran's preparedness to further boost the close ties between Iran and the South American country.
Venezuela's governing United Socialist Party (PSUV) won the greatest share of the vote in December 8 elections.
President Nicolas Maduro was able to reconnect with the social base that kept former president Hugo Chavez in power as the government party won in municipal elections.
With most votes counted, the PSUV has 49% while the opposition has about 43%.
