Merkel Injured in Ski Accident

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Chancellor Angela Merkel fractured her pelvis in a cross country skiing accident, her spokesman said on Monday.

The chancellor was on her winter holidays in Switzerland when she had the accident and has cancelled three weeks of meetings.

Government spokesman Steffen Seibert said during a press conference in Berlin that the injury occurred during Merkel’s winter holidays, AFP reported.

She has suffered “serious bruising in connection with a partial fracture on her left posterior pelvic ring," he said.

“We believe she was going at a low speed,” he added.

Merkel cannot travel by plane and must lie down as much as possible in the next three weeks, Seibert said.

It means she will have to cancel planned visits to Poland and a meeting with the Luxembourg Prime Minister in Berlin.

Seibert added she was still able to work from home and will be at the cabinet meeting on Wednesday.
