MP: Erdogan’s Visit to Iran to Mark Milestone in Regional Issues

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A senior Iranian lawmaker said Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s forthcoming visit to Tehran will have great significance for the region, as Tehran-Ankara cooperation will have a major impact on the Syrian crisis.

Speaking to reporters here in Tehran on Monday, Chairman of the Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi said Erdogan’s upcoming visit to Iran “is a very important trip in this juncture.”

Stressing the necessity for a marked shift in Turkey’s policies towards crisis-ridden Syria, Boroujerdi urged closer cooperation between Iran and Turkey to promote peace and security throughout the region despite outside interference, like US policies in the Middle East.

“We should not let the US to implement its policies in our sensitive region and in the Islamic world by sending weapons and terrorists (into Syria),” the legislator said.

Erdogan’s upcoming visit to Iran, Boroujerdi noted, will not only contribute to expansion of bilateral ties between Tehran and Ankara, but also marks a momentous event with an eye to the regional upheavals.

The Turkish prime minister is expected to arrive in Tehran on Tuesday, January 28, to meet high-ranking Iranian officials, including President Hassan Rouhani.

This visit will take place at the invitation of the Iranian president.

During Erdogan’s stay in Tehran, the two countries' officials plan to sign trade and strategic agreements, and consult on the Syrian crisis.

Exploring ways to strengthen relations between Tehran and Ankara is also on the agenda.
