IRGC Equipped with Large Number of Ballistic Missiles, Air Defense System

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - The Iranian Defense Ministry on Wednesday delivered a large number of four types of home-made ballistic missiles and an indigenous air defense system to the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Aerospace Force.

In a ceremony this morning, Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan elaborated on the features of the products manufactured by his ministry’s experts.

A large number of the missiles were then handed over to the IRGC Aerospace forces for practical use.

The domestically-made products, include four types of ballistic missiles, dubbed Qadr, Qiam, Fateh-110 and the Persian Gulf, as well as an air defense system, called Mersad.

As regard the specifics of the home-made missiles, Dehqan noted that the Qadr-1H ballistic missile and the Qiam mid-range missile are capable of carrying diverse types of blast-fragmentation warheads, adding that they can detonate a broad range of targets.

Enumerating the other advantages of those two missiles, the minister said they can be fired from silos and mobile launchers in different positions, and can also penetrate the enemy’s missile defense shields, thanks to their radar-evading capability.

Turning to the other mass-produced missiles, now in possession of the IRGC in large numbers, Brigadier General Dehqan described the Fateh-110D ground-to-ground missile and the Persian Gulf coast-to-sea missile as very precise missiles with pin-point accuracy, which are classified as the fourth generation of super-modern ballistic missiles.

He said the two latter ones are among the very few missiles that track the target until the final moment of collision.

The minister then pointed to the Mersad air defense system, describing it as a small and mobile system which could be integrated with the country’s air defense system with agility.

The Mersad can identify and track all kinds of the enemy’s flying targets, including high-speed fighter jets, choppers, cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in a passive manner, he explained.

“When equipped with an electro-optical tracker, this system (the Mersad) is capable of performing desirable operations in electronic warfare, and can confront several targets simultaneously,” Dehqan pointed out.

In recent years, the Islamic Republic of Iran has made great achievements in its defense sector and has attained self-sufficiency in producing essential military equipment and systems.
