Leader’s Adviser Blasts UN Chief’s Biased Remarks on Iran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Supreme Leader's top aide for the international affairs lashed out at the UN secretary general for his recent claims on lack of freedom of expression in Iran, and described Ban Ki-moon as “the most impotent ever” chief of the global body.

“Ban Ki-moon’s remarks are worth nothing as (comments by) the secretary general of an organization like the UN, and he makes remarks on a selective basis and with political intention,” Director of the Strategic Research Center of Iran's Expediency Council Ali Akbar Velayati told reporters on the sidelines of an international conference on the “Role of the Islamic World on the Global Power Structure” here in Tehran on Wednesday.

His comments came after Ban in a report to the UN Human Rights Council on Tuesday accused Iran’s president of failing to fulfill his campaign promises to allow greater freedom of expression.

“Because of the very lack of dependence in the incumbent (UN) secretary general’s stances, we can say that he is almost the most impotent secretary general of the United Nations,” Velayati added.

The adviser then viwed Ban as  “an individual completely in the hands of the Americans”, noting that he is forced to echo whatever the US dictates to him.

Ban has remained silent on the global crises, Velayati explained, saying the UN chief acts as a proxy for the White House.

In his recent report, Ban said, "The new administration (of Iran) has not made any significant improvement in the promotion and protection of freedom of expression and opinion, despite pledges made by the president during his campaign and after his swearing in.”

This comes as the global body has so far adopted a neutral position towards the innumerable cases of human rights violation inside the US.
