Iran’s President Due in Afghanistan to Attend Nowruz Festival

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Iranian President Hassan Rouhani is scheduled to pay a visit to Afghanistan next week to partake in an international festival, celebrated each year on the occasion of Nowruz.

The Afghan capital of Kabul is geared up to host the 4th International Nowruz Festival next week.

President Rouhani has been officially invited to the forthcoming festival, which will be also attended by the heads of state from Tajikistan and the Republic of Azerbaijan.

The Iranian president will travel to Kabul on March 27 to take part in the gathering in celebration of Nowruz.

The first and second International Nowruz Festivals were held in Iran’s capital of Tehran.

And Tajikistan hosted the third such gathering in 2012.

Nowruz (new day), which falls on March 21 this year, is the first day of Farvardin, the first month on the Iranian calender year.

In Iran and many other countries people welcome spring with the ancient Nowruz celebrations. Nowruz coincides with the astronomical Vernal Equinox Day or the first day of spring.

International Nowruz Day was registered on the UNESCO List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on February 23, 2010, and the festivities are now celebrated in many countries as far as the US and Canada.
