Spokeswoman Terms EP’s Anti-Iran Resolution Baseless, Unacceptable

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The anti-Iran resolution passed recently by the European Parliament (EP) over the human rights situation in the Islamic Republic drew furious reaction from the Iranian officials, with the country’s foreign ministry spokeswoman slamming it as baseless and unacceptable.

On Thursday, April 3, the European Parliament passed a resolution expressing grave concern over the human rights situation in Iran and the “continued, systemic violation of fundamental rights” in the country, and called on the members of the European Union to “mainstream human rights in all of its relations with Iran.”

In reply, foreign ministry spokesperson, Marziyeh Afkham on Friday deplored the biased resolution as “baseless, invalid and unacceptable.”

Afkham also blamed the recent move, which she said aimed at damaging the relations between Iran and Europe, on a certain stratum of extremist MEPs, under the influence of the Zionist lobbies and opponents of the Islamic Republic.

The spokeswoman further called on the European body to “look for ways of creating common understanding and more favorable conditions on the basis of mutual respect and common interests, rather than making efforts to put obstacles in the way of cooperation.”

Passing such resolutions by the EP is an overt application of human rights issue for political purposes, she noted.
