Egypt Urged to Allow All Parties Free Political Activities

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – An Iranian diplomat said all parties and movements in Egypt should enjoy free political activities, noting that Cairo has to take that approach in order to remain as a regional power.

Egyptian officials should permit the whole political parties and streams free activities, so that the Egyptians would enjoy an exemplary democratic system, Mojtaba Ferdowsipour, an official with Iran’s Foreign Ministry told the Tasnim News Agency on Saturday.

The Iranian diplomat also emphasized the importance of “free and transparent” presidential elections in Egypt, saying the Arab country’s authorities should “allow different political streams and parties to be able to conduct electoral campaigns with complete freedom in the process of civil society.”

Democratic elections would enable Egypt to remain a regional power and be known as a role model for the Arab world, Ferdowsipour explained.

Egypt will hold a presidential election on May 26 and 27, 10 months after the army ousted former President Mohamed Mursi.

Retired army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who toppled Mursi last July, will run for president.

The election would go into a second round on June 16 and 17 if there is no outright winner, but that outcome seems unlikely given Sisi's popularity and the absence of serious contenders.
