Iran Dismisses Washington’s Human Rights Allegations as Baseless

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Spokesman for Iran’s UN mission in New York Hamid Babaei on Thursday described US accusations against Iran’s human rights record as unfounded.

“Iran categorically rejects baseless accusations raised in the statement of (Washington’s UN envoy Samantha Power) regarding status of human rights and civil liberties in the Islamic Republic of Iran and finds these assertions both unconstructive, obstructive and against the spirit of cooperation between sovereign member states,” Babaei said.

The US envoy on Wednesday protested to Iran’s election to the United Nations Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and accused Tehran of violating human rights laws. The committee decides on which NGOs will be accredited at the United Nations.

Babaei underscored that civil society and thousands of NGOs are actively pursuing their goals in different areas such as social, economic, environmental, political, women and human rights, etc in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

He also stressed that Iran has a history of constructive cooperation with the United Nations.

“Against this backdrop, it is obvious that Iran’s active presence in UN bodies will be helpful and serve the attainment of non-governmental organization objectives,” Babaei stated.
