Iran Warns against Consequences of Egypt’s Death Sentences

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry cautioned on Tuesday against the “political and social” consequences of new mass death sentences issued by an Egyptian court, saying the verdict could encourage the Arab country’s enemies to aggravate the situation.

On Monday, an Egyptian court sentenced the leader of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood and 682 supporters to death.

Speaking in her weekly press conference in Tehran on Tuesday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham reacted to the recent mass trials in the biggest Arab country, saying such verdict is in contradiction to Egypt’s historical and political approaches.

“Such judicial decrees, which could have social and political consequences, encourages Egypt’s enemies to aggravate the current conditions, and we believe that issuing such sentences contradicts Egypt’s historical, political and cultural principles of tolerance and indulgence,” she said.

The spokeswoman noted that Iran is closely monitoring the developments in Egypt, adding that Tehran has a great deal of respect for the Egyptian nation’s great achievement, namely the revolution.

Preservation of the Egyptian revolution’s achievements requires fulfillment of the Egyptian people’s demands, and approaches on the basis of equality and creation of national unity among the civil groups and organizations to uphold the Arab country’s regional influence, she stated.
