Events in Ukraine Not to Affect Tehran-Kiev Friendly Ties: Iranian Diplomat

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The political developments in Ukraine will not leave negative impacts on friendly ties between Tehran and Kiev, an Iranian deputy foreign minister stressed.

The remark was made by Morteza Sarmadi on Saturday during his meeting with the outgoing Ukrainian ambassador to Tehran, Alexander Sergei Samarovsky.

“Continuation of the crisis in the country damages Ukraine’s national interests,” Sarmadi said about the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.

The Iranian diplomat further stressed Tehran's principled stance regarding territorial integrity and non-interference in other countries’ affairs, hoping that current problems in Ukraine would be solved by people.

Having appreciated Samarovsky for his constructive efforts for strengthening bilateral ties between the two countries during his mission in Tehran, Sarmadi added that the two countries have always enjoyed growing ties.

Referring to numerous potentials for boosting ties between the two states, especially in the field of economy and trade, Sarmadi expressed the hope that the incoming ambassador would help further expand Tehran-Kiev ties.

During the meeting, Samarovsky briefed Sarmadi on the status quo in Ukraine.

The Ukrainian envoy hoped that bilateral ties would strengthen after his country leaves behind the crisis.

The crisis in Ukraine erupted last November when the country’s then President Viktor Yanukovych refrained from signing an association agreement with the EU in favor of closer ties with Russia. Yanukovych left the country for Russia as the political turmoil against his decision became increasingly violent.
