US Seeking Destruction of Syria, SANA Chief Says

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The director general of the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) described as "unfounded" claims about sectarian and ethnic conflicts in Syria, and stressed that the US is seeking destruction of the Muslim country.

Ahmad Dhowa emphasized that the US has officially declared that it wants to destroy Syria.

Speaking during the 7th General Assembly of Islamic Radios and Televisions Union in Tehran on Sunday, Dhowa stated that the Syrian army is now defending the country since it is the representative of the people.

“Some claim that the army is from an especial tribe, while this is not true,” he added.

As regards the ongoing crisis in the Arab country, he said, “We do not have any religious and tribal conflict in Syria, of course there are people who believe in these disputes, but some agitating media outlets is exploiting this issue."

Commenting on the upcoming presidential elections in Syria, Dhowa said that the elections will be held in all cities of the country.

“Enemies try to show the election insignificant but it is predicted that 60 percent will participate in the elections, while only 59 percent of US people took part in their own elections,” he noted.

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. The UN says more than 130,000 people have been killed since the beginning of the unrest in 2011. More than 2.2 million Syrians have fled to neighboring countries while an estimated 4.25 million have been displaced internally.

It recently warned against the humanitarian situation in Syria, saying that over nine million people are in need of urgent aid due to the crisis in the Middle Eastern country.
