Iran Condemns Terrorist Attack on Afghan Candidate

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran condemned the terrorist attack on the convoy of Afghan presidential candidate Abdullah Abdullah in Kabul on Friday, in which a number of civilians were killed and many others injured.

In a message issued on Saturday, Iran' Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham deplored the deadly bomb attack and expressed her condolences to the families of the victims.

She described the terrorist attack as part of extremist groups' attempts to undermine the democratic process in Afghanistan.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran supports the democratic process and considers holding the presidential election in Afghanistan as an honor for the Muslim people of the country, who contribute to the determination of their destiny. This trend not only strengthens national unity and domestic resources but also is a strong response to (the groups perpetrating) violence and terrorism in the country,” she added.

The front-runner in Afghan's presidential election, Abdullah Abdullah escaped uninjured from the assassination attempt when two explosions targeted his campaign motorcade in Kabul on Friday, killing at least 10 people, including three in his entourage.

The deadly attack came just a week before the second-round presidential runoff on June 14.

Abdullah later told an election rally that the aim of the attack, which heavily damaged the front of his armored car, “was to create fear and anxiety among the people and prevent them from deciding their own destiny.”
