Iran Pledges Support for Counter-Terrorism Campaign

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran does not tolerate the violence and acts of terror that have engulfed the region and will steadfastly counter such extremist moves, the country’s president said.

“Today, we are unfortunately witnessing violence, homicide, terror and displacement of people everywhere in this region (the Middle East),” President Hassan Rouhani said in an address to a cultural ceremony in Tehran on Thursday.

He reiterated that the Islamic Republic is adamantly opposed to such acts of violence and terrorism.

“For our part, as we announced in the United Nations, we will fight against violence and extremism and terrorism in the region and in the world,” the president stressed.

In December last year, the UN General Assembly approved a proposal presented by President Rouhani for a World Against Violence and Extremism (WAVE), which asks the UN member states to unite against extremism, violence and sectarian conflicts in all their forms.

Elsewhere in his comments, Rouhani warned that a growing trend in the terrorist activities is yet another indication that the enemies target the unity of Muslims and the regional countries.

In the most recent development in the region, members of the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terrorist group have carried out deadly assaults on some Iraqi cities, including the provincial capitals of Mosul and Tikrit.

The foreign-backed ISIL militants, along with the al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Nusra front, are among the main groups that have breed violence in the region in recent years, particularly in Syria.
