Iran Renews Unflagging Support for Syrian Nation

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s first vice president reiterated that Tehran will be lending its unwavering support for the Syria nation by sending humanitarian aid to the crisis-ridden Arab country.

In a telephone conversation with the Syrian prime minister on Monday, Iran’s Eshaq Jahangiri also expressed the hope that the government and nation of Syria could take “effective steps towards strengthening of national cooperation and reconstruction” of their country.

Highlighting the high turnout of people in Syria’s presidential election in early June, Jahangiri said the poll was a sign that extremists could no way undermine Syrians’ political will.

Syrian PM Wael al-Halqi, for his part, expressed gratitude to Iran for its stances towards Syria.

He also pointed to the “eye-catching and very positive developments” underway in Syria to bring about national reconciliation, noting that Syrian people are increasingly backing the government.

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. The UNHCR said in its annual Global Trends report in June that Syrians fleeing the escalating conflict accounted for most of the world's 2.5 million new refugees in 2013.

In all, nearly 3 million Syrians have crossed into neighboring Lebanon, Turkey, Iraq and Jordan, while another 6.5 million remain displaced within Syria's borders, according to the report.
