Belgium Beats US in Extra Time, Advances in World Cup

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Belgium national football team defeated US 2-1 in the last 16 of the 2014 World Cup on Wednesday.

The game went to overtime after regulation ended with the score 0-0.

Kevin de Bruyne was on target for Belgium in the 93rd minute and Romelu Lukaku extended the lead in the 105th minute. Julian Green pulled a goal back two minutes later, but the Americans couldn't muster another to send the match to a penalty shootout.

“We've seen a very conquering Belgium team,” Belgium coach Marc Wilmots.

“(US goalkeeper Tim) Howard had a fantastic match. We deserve our win and I'm already focusing on the quarterfinals against Argentina," he added.

“We need to forget about this match. Four days is very short to prepare for the Argentina game. I said I would create a team that would play football and we've done it.”

Belgium will play Argentina in the quarter-final on Saturday.
