Abdullah Deputy Raises Prospect of Parallel Afghan Gov't

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The deputy of Afghanistan presidential candidate Abdullah Abdullah has raised the possibility of the formation of a parallel government in protest at what he called an “ominous coup” to hijack the votes of the people of Afghanistan during the country’s recent runoff election.

“An unfair plot by the evil triangle of presidential palace, dependent Electoral Complaints Commission, and the fraudulent team staged a coup d’état against people’s votes,” said Mohammad Mohaqiq, who is the founder and chairman of the People's Islamic Unity Party of Afghanistan.

Mohaqiq added that the Independent Electoral Complaints Commission (which he terms as “dependent”) has forged over 2.6 million ballots in favor of Ashraf Ghani, Abdullah’s rival, to help him win the vote.

Meanwhile, Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai who is in lead after the preliminary results were announced on Monday, has accepted the election results after he secured 56.44 percent of more than 8 million votes in the presidential runoff held on June 14.

Based on preliminary results announced by the country’s Election Commission, Abdullah Abdullah garnered 43.56 percent of the ballots.

However, Abdullah's team termed the results as illegitimate, saying no decision of the Election Commission is acceptable unless the transparency is ensured in the election process.
