Diplomat Calls for Revival of Iran-Spain Ties

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran's Acting Deputy Foreign Minister Morteza Sarmadi expressed the country's preparedness to broaden ties with Spain in different fields.

In a Tuesday meeting with Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Spanish Parliament Josep Antoni Duran i Lleida in Tehran, Sarmadi hoped that the level of relations between the two nations in the fields of energy, agriculture and industry will rise to those of the past.

“Spain is one of the major European Union countries and there are grounds for the enhancement of bilateral ties and mutual cooperation in the regional and international arenas with that country,” he added.

The visiting Spaniard, for his part, said he travelled to Tehran to discuss the issues of mutual interest with the Iranian officials.

Lleida noted that on the agenda of his visit to Iran are talks about expansion of ties in various fields, including parliamentary relations.

Earlier in March, in a meeting with his Spanish counterpart, Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif hailed the historical ties between Iran and Spain, saying that the two countries' ties have been on the basis of “mutual respect and common interests”.

“The both countries’ political willpower calls for the promotion of ties, particularly in the economic sphere,” Zarif said at the time.

Spain’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo y Marfil had also called for the enhancement of Tehran-Madrid relations, the economic ties in particular.
