Int'l Quds Day Marked in US Capital (+Photos)

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Residents of the US capital Washington held commemorative rallies on Friday to mark the International Quds Day as a gesture of support for the Palestinian people.

According to Tasnim dispatches, demonstrators gathered in front of the Islamic Center of Washington  to express solidarity with the Palestinian people, who have been suffering from Israel’s atrocities for decades.

They then marched towards Dupont Circle, chanting anti-Israeli slogans and voicing support for the people of Gaza.

The demonstrators waved Palestinian flags and held up signs calling for an immediate end to the Israeli attacks against Palestinians.

This year's International Quds Day rallies came against the backdrop of a massive Israeli onslaught on the besieged Gaza Strip.

After 19 days of Israeli offensive on Gaza, above 900 Palestinians have been killed, and more than 5,000 other injured in the blockaded enclave.

Each year, the International Quds Day is celebrated on the last Friday of the holy Muslim month of Ramadan.

The event’s overarching theme is support for the Palestinians and fierce denunciation of Israel.

The day is also seen as the legacy of the late founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Imam Khomeini, who officially declared the last Friday of the holy month of Ramadan as International Quds Day back in 1979.
