Over 27,000 Infected with HIV in Iran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Official figures released by Iran’s Health Ministry put the number of patients infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) at 27,888.

The latest report by the health ministry shows the number of the HIV-infected patients in Iran as of March 21, 2014.

Men accounted for 88.7 percent of HIV infections and 11.3 percent of the victims are women.

Among the entire cases of HIV, recorded in Iran since 1986, infections were attributed to injected drug use (67.6%), unprotected sexual contact (13.4%) and mother-to-child transmission (1.2%) respectively.

AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) is a disease of the human immune system caused by infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

According to the 2013 UNAIDS Global Report, globally, an estimated 35.3 (32.2–38.8) million people were living with HIV in 2012.
