Afghan Vote Audit Over, Results Expected within Days

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – An audit of votes from Afghanistan's disputed presidential election runoff was over Thursday night, spokesman of the election commission Noor Mohammad Noor said Friday.

"At last, the election commission completed 100 percent the auditing and recounting process of the ballot boxes at 08:00 pm local time on Thursday," Noor told reporters at a press conference in Kabul.

Nevertheless, he did not give the date for announcing the results, saying the election results would be announced after examination of the complaints by the election complaint commission, Xinhua reported.

Since all of the eight presidential contenders had failed to secure more than 50 percent of some 7 million votes cast in April 5 presidential polls, the two front-runners Abdullah Abdullah and Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai went for runoff on June 14.

In the wake of emerging dispute between the two candidates over the transparency of the election process, the election commission began recounting and auditing the votes on July 17.

The election results, according to Noor, might be announced within days.
