Iran Supporting Palestine to Curb Zionists: Speaker

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s parliament speaker underlined that Tehran's backing for the Palestinian anti-Israeli resistance movements is aimed at ending the influence of Zionists in the region.

“We are paying to end the influence of the Zionist stream in the region, and this is an Islamic duty,” Ali Larijani said, addressing the opening session of an International pro-Palestine conference here in Tehran on Tuesday.

The speaker also dismissed claims that Iran might seek to establish an “empire”, and derided the comment as a “mischievous remark made by a pro-Zionist individual.”

He was referring to the comments by Henry Kissinger, a former US secretary of state, who said on Saturday that Iran is a powerful nation with incentive to reconstruct its historical ancient Persian Empire.

The Iranian speaker further emphasized that unlike the West which is after domination, the Islamic Republic is trying to awaken the Islamic Ummah (community).

Larijani went on to say that the anti-Israeli resistance movements, either in Lebanon or Palestine, draw inspiration from the Islamic Revolution.

In recent years, the concept of resistance has attracted a great deal of attention across the Muslim world.

It refers mainly to the courage and fortitude shown by the people of Palestine, who have withstood Israel’s crimes for years.

In a stark reminder of the Tel Aviv regime’s brutalities, more than 2,000 Palestinians, most of them civilians including more than 490 children, were killed in the Gaza Strip after Israel launched an offensive on the coastal enclave of 1.8 million population on July 8.

Back in August, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh hailed the signing of a long-term ceasefire with Israel as a victory for the Palestinian resistance.

The long-term ceasefire agreement, meanwhile, promises a gradual easing of the Israeli-imposed economic blockade of Gaza, which Israel has maintained with Egyptian support since 2007.
