Iran Keen to Promote Ties with Neighbors: President Rouhani

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said that Tehran is seeking to strengthen relations with regional countries, its neighbors in particular.

Iran attaches great importance to its bilateral relations with Kazakhstan, President Rouhani said during a meeting with Kazakhstan’s Prime Minister Karim Massimov in Astana on Tuesday.

Rouhani also emphasized that age-old cultural commonalities can pave the way for the expansion of relations between Tehran and Astana.

The Kazakh premier, for his part, said that he has been asked by Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev to pursue the implementation of the agreements signed between the two countries during President Rouhani’s visit to Kazakhstan.

Rouhani on Monday started a 5-day tour of Central Asia that takes him to Kazakhstan and Tajikistan, where he will attend a summit meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

During the official visit, ministers from Iran and Kazakhstan signed a number of agreements on mutual trade and diplomatic interaction.

The documents were in connection with international transportation, a roadmap to the mercantile, industrial and trade cooperation between Iran and Kazakhstan and a 5-year plan on cooperation between foreign ministries of the two countries.

The agreements were signed on Tuesday after a closed-door meeting between Presidents Rouhani and Nazarbayev at Kazakhstan’s presidential palace.
