Bahraini Opposition Calls for High Turnout in Pro-Democracy Rallies

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Secretary-General of Bahrain’s al-Wefaq National Islamic Society Sheikh Ali Salman called on the people of the Persian Gulf country to take to streets and hold pro-democracy rallies this Friday.

“These days are important in determining the direction of the pro-democracy movement, which began its move on February 14, therefore the high turnout (in the Friday rallies) is very important,” Sheikh Salman said on his official Twitter account.

“We should clarify our message through insisting on our rights,” he said.

Sheikh Salman also said that supporters of the February 14 movement should take to streets to make their voice heard.

Since mid-February 2011, thousands of anti-regime protesters have staged numerous demonstrations in Bahrain, calling for the Al Khalifa royal family to relinquish power, amid the regime heavy-handed crackdown.

On March 14, 2011, troops from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates were deployed to Bahrain to assist the Manama regime in its crackdown on the peaceful protesters.
