Iran President to Discuss Counterterrorism, Climate Change at UN

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said he will use the UN podium at this week’s General Assembly to explore the avenues to tackle the menace of terrorism and violence as well as the issue of climate change in his UN trip.

“Last year, the issue of violence and extremism, of which the world should be void, were proposed by Iran. Today, our prediction has come true and we see how the region is plagued with extremism. This year, we will discuss the ways of countering terrorism and violence,” Rouhani said on Monday upon his arrival at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport.

The president is in the US to attend the 69th annual session of the UN General Assembly.

President Rouhani said he will also attend a global summit meeting on climate change on the sidelines of the event.

The Iranian chief executive is expected to deliver a speech to the 193-nation UN General Assembly, and will also hold a number of meetings with his foreign counterpart and other high-ranking officials.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has announced that more than 140 heads of state or government will attend the assembly’s annual "general debate", which begins on Wednesday and ends September 30.
