Japan Enhances Sanctions on Russia over Ukraine

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Japan on Wednesday announced further sanctions against Russia over its move related to current Ukrainian turbulence, with the sanctions taking effect the same day.

According to the fresh sanctions, Japan puts restrictions on exports to Russia of weapons and other items for military use, and on providing arms technology, Japan's Kyodo News quoted Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga as saying.

Japan will also ban five Russian banks from issuing securities in Japan, the report said.

"We will continue to work with other Group of Seven developed countries, and urge (Russia) to resolve the situation in Ukraine peacefully and diplomatically," Suga was quoted as saying at a press conference.

Japan has joined in hands with the US and some European countries to impose sanctions earlier on Russia over the issue, Xinhua reported.

Japan also reportedly dropped the plan to invite Russian President Vladimir Putin to visit Japan this fall, but asked to have a meeting between Putin and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe during a meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Beijing in November.
