Zarif, Muallem Discuss How to Tackle Terrorism

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his Syrian counterpart Walid al-Muallem, in a meeting in New York, called on world states to avoid politicizing the issue of fighting against terrorism.

During the meeting, the two sides described the threat posed by the spread of extremism in the Middle East as “urgent” and “serious”, and underlined the necessity for confronting terrorism and extremism.

The two sides, who met on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, highlighted the need for more collaboration and exchange of views on the issue of terrorism.

In a separate meeting with his afghan counterpart, Zarif discussed the latest regional developments as well as Iran, Afghanistan bilateral relations.

The Iranian top diplomat said that the recent deal signed between presidential candidates in Afghanistan will boost the national unity in the country.

As refards ties with Afghanistan, he noted that Iran’s policy is to increase the level of cooperation with the new afghan government.

The Acting Afghan Foreign Minister Ahmad Moqbel Zarar, for his part, appreciated Iran’s long-sighted position towards the political developments in his country.

He described Iran as a big neighbor which has always stood beside the people and government of Afghanistan and has played a “major” and “positive” role in regional developments.
