The two top diplomats met on the sidelines of the 69th annual session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Saturday.

The both ministers stressed the need for broader political consultations between Tehran and Santiago to pave the way for cooperation in diverse sectors such as mines, agriculture, technology and management of water resources.

Reciprocal visits by the parliamentary delegations of the two nations was also discussed in their meeting.

Zarif and Charme further discussed other issues including the latest conditions in the talks on Iran’s peaceful nuclear program, the threat of terrorism and extremism as well as the opportunities to deepen bilateral ties.

The promotion of all-out cooperation with Latin American countries has been among the top priorities of the Islamic Republic's foreign policy over the past few years.

Earlier this month, Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani voiced Tehran’s enthusiasm for closer relations with the Latin American nations in messages to congratulate Chile on its independence day.
