Iran Not to Allow Terrorists to Overthrow Syrian President

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs underlined Tehran’s support for Syria’s legitimate president and said Iran would take necessary moves within the framework of international laws to defend its allies.

“Iran will not allow terrorists to overthrow Bashar al-Assad,” Hossein Amir Abdollahian said on Thursday, reiterating Tehran’s support for its allies in the axis of resistance.

He referred to the US-led attacks against militants from the so-called Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) on the Syrian soil and said if the coalition makes the mistake of moving toward fundamental political change in Syria, it will face dire consequences.

“The message has been properly conveyed to the Americans that any move in that direction would have serious consequences for them and for the Zionist regime (of Israel)”

The deputy foreign minister noted that prior to launching attacks on the ISIL in Syria, the US has conveyed it to Tehran as well as Damascus that it has no intention of striking Syrian government’s centers.

“Nonetheless, we do not trust them (the Americans) in this regard and are carefully monitoring the developments.”

The US and its allies have been carrying out airstrikes against the ISIL militants operating inside Syria since September 22.

Amir Abdollahian further said Iran has also warned the government of Turkey against possible military intervention in Syria.
