Iran's Speaker Deplores Certain States' Support for ISIL

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian parliament speaker blamed some regional countries and big powers for the advances of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terrorist group in the region, saying that terrorists’ moves in the region will not be simply resolved.

“Western states and some regional countries have not changed their goals in the region yet,” Ali Larijani said in a meeting with Marzouq Al-Ghanim, the Speaker of the Kuwaiti National Assembly, on the sidelines of the 131st Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Geneva.

“Therefore, it should not be assumed that the issue of terrorist activities in the region will be simply settled,” the Iranian parliament speaker added.

He also voiced doubts over the sincerity of the US-led coalition against terrorism, saying that the countries, which have provided support for the ISIL group, has now joined the coalition.

The Kuwaiti lawmaker, for his part, expressed deep concern about the threats posed by terrorist groups, the ISIL in particular, to the Middle East region, and said all regional countries should help counter the threats.

“The threats posed by the groups are inevitable,” Ghanim said, adding that they are seeking to sow discord among Shiite and Sunni Muslims.

The ISIL militants made swift advances in much of northern and western Iraq over the summer, after capturing large swaths of northern Syria.

Since late September, the US and several of its Arab and western allies have been conducting airstrikes against ISIL inside Syria and Iraq with almost no significant result.
