Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham in a statement on Tuesday strongly condemned the terrorist attack in Iraq, which led to the martyrdom of Iraqi lawmaker Ahmed al-Khafaji and a number of innocent people.

She also extended Iran’s condolences to the Iraqi nation and government.

The Iranian spokeswoman described serious efforts to counter terrorism as  "a regional necessity".

The deadly suicide bomb attack occurred at a checkpoint in Baghdad’s Shiite neighborhood of Kadhimiya. At least 25 people were killed and more than 50 others suffered injuries in the attack.

Police and medics said Ahmed al-Khafaji, a member of the Shiite Badr political party and a former deputy interior minister, was among the dead in the blast. Five police officers were also killed, police and medical officials said.
