Final Iran Nuclear Deal to Improve Regional, Int’l Security: Analyst

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – This is the best time for Iran and six world powers to clinch a comprehensive nuclear deal, the executive director of the Arms Control Association said, adding that the long-awaited agreement will have beneficial effects on the regional and international security as well.

“By adjusting Iran's nuclear program to meet rather than exceed its practical nuclear energy needs, in exchange for the phased removal of international sanctions against Iran, a long-term, verifiable, comprehensive nuclear deal between Iran and the EU3+3 would improve regional and international security for many years to come,” Daryl G. Kimball told the Tasnim News Agency in an e-mail interview.

His comments come ahead of a fresh round of nuclear talks between Iran and the group of six world powers (also known as P5+1 or E3+3) with the aim of securing an accord on Tehran’s peaceful nuclear program.

“This is the best time for the P5+1 and Iran to reach a long-term, verifiable comprehensive nuclear agreement because the two sides are close to an agreement on all the issues and both sides are highly motivated to reach agreement,” Kimball pointed out.

“A win-win agreement is within reach. Neither side, however, is willing to reach an agreement at ‘any price’,” he explained.

Iran and the G5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) are in talks to hammer out a final deal to end a decade of impasse over Tehran’s civilian nuclear work.

On November 24, 2013, the two sides signed an interim nuclear deal in the Swiss city of Geneva.

The Geneva deal (the Joint Plan of Action) came into effect in January and expired in July, when the parties decided to extend negotiations until November 24 in the hope of clinching a final deal that would end a decade of impasse over Tehran’s peaceful nuclear energy program.

Meanwhile, the parties are preparing for a last-ditch effort to reach an agreement on November 18 in Vienna.
