Minister: Armenia Seeking to Double Trade Exchanges with Iran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Armenian Energy and Natural Resources Minister Ervand Zakharyan, who is on an official visit to Iran, said that Yerevan is determined to double the value of its trade ties with Tehran.

Currently, the value of the annual trade between Iran and Armenia amounts to 300 million dollars, Zakharyan told reporters on the sidelines of the 12th session of the two countries' joint economic commission in Tehran on Monday.

“We plan to double the figure (value of annual trade) through mutual cooperation between the two countries," he added.

Zakharyan said that Armenia attaches great significance to its relations with Iran, which would be in line with the interests of the two countries.

The Armenian minister also commented on the construction of a hydroelectric power station in Armenia’s southern town of Meghri, in a bid to increase the potential for energy exchange with Iran and expressed the hope that proper measures for the construction would start soon.

He also said the third line for high voltage electricity transmission from Armenia to Iran would become operational by 2018, adding that the project would increase the power exchange by 2 to 3 times.
