Assad Hails Religious Scholars' Role in Promoting National Reconciliation

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Syrian president Bashar al-Assad emphasized the important role played by the religious scholars in strengthening national reconciliation and promoting the culture of dialogue among the people.

The Syrian president made the remarks during a meeting with a delegation of Muslim and Christian clerics who had participated in an annual conference of the Religious Endowments (Awqaf) Ministry kicked off in Damascus on Sunday.

He praised the meeting with religious figures, saying that such meetings reflect the power and solidarity of the Syrian society.

Assad said the Syrian nation’s vigilance about realities on the ground in the country “opens up new prospects for religious works in line with distinguishing between destructive fanaticism and genuine faith."

Syria has been gripped by deadly violence since March 2011. More than 191,000 people have been killed in over three years of fighting in the war-ravaged country.

The US and some of its regional allies have been supporting the terrorist militants operating inside Syria for more than three years.

Iran has frequently underlined its support for the Syrian government and people in their battle against foreign-backed terrorists.
