Iran Military Drill Enters 2nd Day with Ground Force in Lead

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A large-scale military maneuver in south and southeastern Iran entered the second day on Friday with the Ground Force units taking the lead by employing a range of home-grown equipment.

The “Muhammad Rasulullah” (Muhammad, the messenger of God) wargame, which began on Thursday with the participation of different Army units, resumed this morning.

The Ground Force units began to open a heavy barrage of artillery fire designed to support friendly troops and installations in the face of the hypothetical enemy.

The artillery and missile units opened fire at specified targets, while a number of home-made small arms and weapons, including Shaher and Akhgar as well as tanks such as Zolfaqar and Samsaam were utilized.

Meantime, military choppers of the Airborne division of the Iranian Army Ground Force carried out operation to support the ground units.

During the wargames on Friday, the air defense forces uses its headquarters and a tactical base for electronic warfare in line with supporting operating ground and naval forces.

The Air Force is also planned to protect the Ground Force units by using its F-4 Phantom and Mirage fighter aircraft.

The maneuver will run until December 31 in a large area of 2.2 million square kilometers, stretching from the northern Indian Ocean (10 degrees latitude) to the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf and in the southeastern and southern Iranian provinces of Sistan and Balouchestan and Hormozgan.
