Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the large-scale wargame, codenamed “Muhammad Rasulullah” (Muhammad, the messenger of God), Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said the Fateh submarine will be tested during the exercises.

In his previous interviews, the commander had described Fateh as one of the most advanced submarines of the country and the region.

With the new product coming into service, the Iranian Navy will be equipped with the full range of light, medium and heavy submarines.

The 527-ton Fateh is said to be highly mobile with the capability to cruise fast and far in deep waters. It is also capable of firing torpedoes and laying mines.

The indigenous submarine is considered a medium undersurface vessel whose weigh at depth increases to 593 tons. It is equipped with an advanced sonic radar system for identifying enemy vessels.

Elsewhere in his comments, Sayyari said one of the main purposes of the ongoing wargame is to demonstrate Iran’s military capabilities in ensuring security across the northern part of the Indian Ocean and east of the Strait of Hormuz.

He added that the wargane has a message for the trans-regional countries, reminding them that Iran is capable of providing security across the region.

The drill will run until December 31 in an area of 2.2 million square kilometers, stretching from the northern Indian Ocean (10 degrees latitude) to the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf and in the southern and southeastern Iranian provinces of Sistan and Balouchestan and Hormozgan.
