“Russia agrees to Iran’s full membership in Shanghai Cooperation Organization but (the implementation of) this issue takes time,” said Valayati.

Dr. Velayati also pointed to the growing economic ties between Tehran and Moscow and said it is estimated that the trade turnover will reach $20 billion in 2015.

The senior advisor on international affairs to Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei pointed to the expansion of international and nuclear cooperation between Iran and Russia, calling for more nuclear collaboration with Moscow.

Velayati also referred to Iran-Russia cooperation on Syria and said it can serve as a positive model for the expansion of regional cooperation.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s special representative, Ali Akbar Velayati, held a one-on-one meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow and passed on a message from the Iranian chief executive.

He held high-profile meetings with senior Russian officials in Moscow on Wednesday evening.

In the gathering, Velayati and Putin agreed on greater efforts to improve the status of Iran’s membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

The discussions also included subjects such as Tehran-Moscow bilateral relations, the regional developments and the international issues.
