TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran plans to raise its capacity to produce steel by 11.6 million tons with the collaboration of a number of domestic and foreign companies.

According to a master plan devised by the Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO), several new steel factories will be constructed in the southern parts of the country to add to the Iranian steel output.

A new steel plant with a capacity to produce four million tons of steel is slated to come on stream in the southern port city of Bandar Abbas with the cooperation of an Indian investor, according to the IMIDRO’s plan named “Steel Master Plan”.

Another factory with a capacity to produce 1.6 million tons of steel will be constructed in Bandar Abbas with the collaboration of a Kuwaiti company.

Two Iranian private companies are also scheduled to implement steel projects in southeastern port city of Chabahar as well as Qeshm island, in southern Iran, each with a capacity to produce three millions of steel.

In September 2014, Iran produced 1.429 million tons of steel, indicating a 4 percent increase compared to the same month in 2013, in which the figure amounted to 1.364 million tons.

Iran is the biggest steel producer in the Middle East and North Africa. The country’s main steel production facilities are located in Isfahan and Khuzestan provinces.
