Some eight weeks after the arrest of secretary general of Bahrain’s main opposition party al-Wefaq National Islamic Society, supporters of Sheikh Salman poured to the streets on Thursday to condemn his imprisonment.
The Arab nations has been the site of simmering protests since Sheikh Salman was arrested on December 28, 2014, on charges of seeking regime change and collaborating with foreign powers. The Shiite cleric has denied the accusations.
In their Thursday rallies, protestors chanted slogans calling for “freedom and dignity”. They also pledged not to relinquish their rights regardless of the ruling regime’s harsh crackdown, according to al-Wefaq website.
Peaceful demonstrations in Bahrain have intensified after Sheikh Salman’s arrest, which has also triggered massive protests outside the monarchy, with leaders, governments and international organizations.
