IAEA Terms Amano’s Talks with Iran Deputy FM as “Useful”
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) described Tuesday talks held between its secretary general Yukiya Amano and Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Seyyed Abbas Araqchi as positive.
“Today’s meeting was useful and facilitated a better understanding between the two sides,” the UN nuclear watchdog said in a statement after the two met in the Austrian capital of Vienna on Tuesday.
“The discussions focused on the need to resolve, as soon as possible, all outstanding issues related to Iran’s nuclear program,” the statement said, according to Reuters.
In today’s meeting, Araqchi, who is also a senior Iranian negotiator in the nuclear talks with six world powers, and Amano exchanged views on Iran’s peaceful nuclear program as well as mutual cooperation between Tehran and the IAEA.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Araqchi said, “Today, I had a very good discussion with Amano. We agreed ... to move faster and in a better sense (in cooperation with the IAEA)."
“We were able to review the course of cooperation between Iran and the Agency and we decided to expedite that cooperation, acknowledging the important role of the Agency in any future possible agreement between Iran and the P5+1,” he added.
Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany), also known as P5+1 or E3+3, are in talks to hammer out a final agreement to end more than a decade of impasse over Tehran’s nuclear energy program.
