Iran Rejects Allegations of Interference in Yemen

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham on Wednesday dismissed remarks made by US Secretary of State John Kerry who accused Tehran of interfering in Yemen’s internal affairs.

“Iran’s principled view is determination of destiny of nations by themselves,” Afkham said on Wednesday in reaction to Kerry’s claims.

She also described Kerry’s remarks as a tactic to pin the blame on the others, stressing that the accusation contradicts the previous comments made by the US political officials.

Speaking to the Senate appropriations committee on Tuesday, Kerry accused Iran of contributing to the collapse of government in Yemen.

The Iranian spokeswoman also voiced Tehran’s opposition to any foreign interference in Yemen’s political developments, slamming that as an obstacle in the way of political stability in the Arab country.

“Any foreign interference complicates the situation in that country (Yemen),” Afkham underlined.

“All parties should let the Yemeni nation decide the faith of its own country, and the entire mechanisms should be on the basis of people’s will,” she added.

In September 2014, the Yemeni Ansarullah movement gained control of Sana’a, following a four-day battle with army which is still viewed as loyal to the former dictator, Ali Abdullah Saleh.

The Ansarullah revolutionaries say the Yemeni government has been incapable of properly running the affairs of the country and providing security. The movement has established a transitional council to govern the country until a new government is elected.

An aide to former Western-backed President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi said Tuesday the embattled leader has retracted his resignation after escaping house arrest in Sana'a at the weekend.

Hadi had tendered his resignation last month after Houthis seized the presidential palace and besieged his residence in Sana'a.
