Zarif will leave for Kazakhstan on Sunday, April 12, at the invitation of his Kazakh counterpart Yerlan Idrisov.

During his two-day visit, the Iranian top diplomat will pursue the implementation of agreements previously reached between Tehran and Astana during Iranian president’s visit to Kazakhstan last year.

In his meetings with the Kazakh officials, Zarif will exchange views on a host of issues, including bilateral relations as well as the latest developments in the region and the world.

During his visit to Astana in September 2014, Iran's President Hassan Rouhani highlighted his government's keenness to strengthen relations with Kazakhstan.

"The policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran's government is [based on] close interaction and relations with regional countries and particularly with neighboring states. Kazakhstan has a special position among them," Rouhani said in a meeting with Kazakh Prime Minister Karim Massimov at the time.

Kazakhstan and Iran are two of the five Caspian littoral states that also include Russia, the Republic of Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan.
