Rouhani is making the visit to Bandung at the official invitation of his Indonesian counterpart, which was handed over by President Joko Widodo's envoy to Tehran Alwi Shihab in March.

The Indonesian foreign ministry has announced that 33 heads of state as well as representatives from 77 countries have confirmed their participation at the summit, due to be held from April 22 to April 23, and the commemoration activities, scheduled for April 24.

The first Asian–African Conference, also known as the Bandung Conference, was held in 1955 in Bandung, Indonesia, which brought together leaders and representatives from 29 Asian and African countries to discuss independence, peace and economic prosperity.

The twenty-five countries that participated at the Bandung Conference represented nearly one-quarter of the Earth's land surface and a total population of 1.5 billion people.
