Iran Holds Defense Talks with Turkey, Lebanon, Pakistan

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan held separate meetings with his counterparts from Turkey, Lebanon and Pakistan in Istanbul and discussed stronger cooperation with the three nations.

The high-profile meetings took place on Thursday, on the sidelines of a commemorative service to mark the 100th anniversary of Gallipoli Campaign.

In the meeting with Dehqan, Turkish Defense Minister Ismet Yilmaz referred to Iran and Turkey as two major, influential countries in the region, and voiced Ankara’s readiness to enhance defense ties with Tehran.

During his stay in Turkey, Dehqan will attend the Peace Summit, due to be held in the city of Canakkale with representatives of over 100 countries in attendance.

The gathering marks the Gallipoli Campaign (also known as the Dardanelles Campaign, the Battle of Gallipoli or the Battle of Canakkale), known as one of the greatest Ottoman victories during the World War I.

The struggle formed the basis for the Turkish War of Independence and the declaration of the Republic of Turkey eight years later under Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, who first rose to prominence as a commander at Gallipoli.
