Iran, Azerbaijan Share Moderate View of Religion: Official

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Asian and Pacific Affairs Ebrahim Rahimpour held a meeting with the highest-ranking religious official of Azerbaijan, during which the two sides explored avenues for expansion of religious ties.

In his Monday meeting with Mubariz Qurbanli in Tehran, Rahimpour described the visit by the head of Azerbaijan's religious affairs committee to Iran as a positive sign for the improvement of bilateral ties.

He added that the Azerbaijani official's visit would pave the way for expanding religious cooperation between the two countries.

Rahimpour further referred to the turbulent conditions of the region and the activities of extremist and terrorist groups near the borders of Iran and Azerbaijan, adding that the recent events in the region indicate the moderate view of the religion held by Iran and Azerbaijan.

The Iranian official also stressed that Tehran is ready to cooperate with Baku in maintaining peace and stability in the region.

Qurbanli, for his part, expressed the hope that the agreements made between the two sides would help increase the number of Azerbaijani students sent to Iran to study in its seminaries and universities.
