Protesters in Bahrain Demand Release of Sheikh Salman

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Bahraini people have once again taken to the streets to voice their opposition to the continued detention of the country’s main opposition leader Sheikh Ali Salman.

World

On Thursday, Bahraini people protested the detention of Salman in al-Musalla area in the capital, Manama, and the northeastern island of Sitra as well as Bilad al-Qadim and Bani Jamreh areas.

The demonstrators, who were chanting anti-regime slogans, demanded the immediate release of Salman, who is the secretary general of Bahrain’s main opposition bloc, the al-Wefaq National Islamic Society, and other political prisoners.

Salman was detained last December on charges including seeking regime change and collaborating with foreign powers.

He has repeatedly denied the allegations, saying that he has been seeking reforms through peaceful means.

Salman’s arrest has sparked condemnation inside and outside Bahrain, with leaders, governments and international organizations across the world urging his immediate release, Press TV reported.

Bahrain has been the scene of almost daily protests against the Al Khalifa regime since early 2011, when an uprising began in the Persian Gulf kingdom

Since then, thousands of demonstrators have held numerous rallies across the country, calling for the Al Khalifa royal family to relinquish power.

Scores of Bahrainis have been killed and hundreds of others wounded and arrested in the ongoing crackdown on peaceful protests.
